Cover Design Award

Celebrating new book cover design talent

Do you want a career in design or illustration, but are yet to land your first role?

Would you like to experience real book cover design briefs and receive feedback from an Art Director?

The Penguin Cover Design Award is your opportunity to take on the role of a book cover designer and build your portfolio.

Prizes include a six-month mentorship with a designer at Penguin, as well as a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium tablet and Penguin books to the value of £100.

All aspiring designers and illustrators in the UK and Ireland are encouraged to enter the Penguin Cover Design Award, regardless of higher education status.

We’re looking for UK and Ireland-based designers and illustrators who haven’t yet had significant experience in a paid creative role – that includes anyone aged 18 or over who is yet to break into the creative industry, students from all subjects and recent graduates.

By significant experience, we mean one year or more (cumulatively) in an in-house or freelancer-paid role, as a creative.

See the eligibility below and the terms and conditions for full details of entry requirements.

Read the briefs to find out which one (or more) you’re interested in exploring further, start your research, reading and get designing!

Download the design template and cover copy for your chosen category and read the submission details for how your PDF file should be set up and named.

All entries must be submitted digitally via our submission form, which will be open for entries from Thursday 16 October 2025 until Thursday 29 January 2026 at 2pm.

To make the process as close to the way our designers work, once the judges have selected the shortlist, the Art Directors will email the shortlisted entrants with individual feedback and further art direction on their cover designs.

The shortlisted entrants will then respond to this direction and have time to re-work their covers before re-sending ahead of the final in-person judging.

Closing date for entries – 2pm on Thursday 29 January 2026

Shortlist announcement – Mid-March 2026

Closing date for shortlist's final submissions – Mid-March 2026

Am I eligible to enter the Penguin Cover Design Award?

To enter the Penguin Cover Design Award, you must be a resident of the UK or Ireland, or have permission to be living in the UK or Ireland* during the Awards timeline (October 2025 – April 2026).

*You are not eligible to enter the awards if you are a Resident of the EU or another country and not currently living, working or studying in Ireland or the UK.

Education status

You do not need to be in education to be able to enter, but we continue to welcome students.

Employment status

Entrants must not have had significant experience in a paid creative role.

By significant experience, we mean that entrants must not:

  • have cumulatively worked for one year or more in a paid creative role*
  • be currently employed in a one-year or permanent contract, in a paid creative role**

*The one year’s experience counts as either continuous or accumulated over a longer period of time. For example, four paid placements of three months each, over the course of two years would make you unable to enter, as that would be one year’s worth of paid experience in total.

If you have worked as a freelancer, this means you must not have made the majority of your income from a creative role for the equivalent of one year or more.

** A creative role is defined as a position where the entrant is employed in any type of creative role such as: illustrator, art director, graphic designer, etc. This includes paid placements. Entrants may still enter if they work (or have worked) for a creative company in a non-creative role.

Minimum age

Entrants must be aged 18 or over by 1 April 2026

What are the prizes?

1st Prize
The first prize winner of each category (Adult Fiction and Children's) will receive a six-month-long mentorship programme with a member of the Penguin Art Department (dates to be confirmed). They will also receive a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium tablet and Penguin books to the value of £100.

2nd Prize
The second-prize winners of each category will receive a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium tablet and Penguin books to the value of £100.

3rd Prize
The third-prize winners of each category will receive a Wacom Intuos Medium tablet and Penguin books to the value of £100.

How is the shortlist selected?

The Penguin Random House Art Directors look through all the submitted designs and together decide which will proceed to the shortlist. At that point they do not have sight of the entrant’s name or any of the details submitted on the entry form, just the design.

Can I work with an illustrator or a photographer?

Yes, but we can only award one prize to the named entrant. Copyright must be cleared for all images used in your cover design and you must include a credit line on the back cover of your design for any third-party images used.

I'm not sure how to set up a template, can you help?

Take a look at the template jargon buster page.

Are there any restrictions to the fonts I can use in my design?

You can use any font that you wish in your design.

The normal copyright rules around font usage apply to your work and it’s your sole responsibility to ensure that you have the correct permissions to use them in your design.

I don’t have the fonts that are specified on the templates, can I use an alternative font that is closely matched?

Yes, you can use an alternative font as long as you have the correct permissions to use it.

Can I enter more than one submission?

You can enter a maximum of one entry per category, so two entries (two designs) in total.

Can I share my design on social media?

We love seeing your interpretations of the Cover Design Award briefs on social media – spread the word about your work! If you choose to share your designs, please include: #PRHDesignAward hashtag and tag @PenguinUKBooks / Penguin Random House UK.

Can I use generative AI in my design?

The Cover Design Award encourages originality from aspiring creatives, and therefore we will not be accepting entries that include any elements created using generative AI.

Will the winning designs be printed to sell in bookshops?

The Cover Design Award is a portfolio development opportunity; the work submitted will not be used in any published works.

In some cases, we do work with the shortlisted designers on published books. For that, we work with the designers as we would do any freelancers.

Any work entered into the Cover Design Award is owned by the entrant.
