I'm interested in bold fiction built on brilliant expression, thought-expanding theme, or daring use of form. I’m moved by compulsive narratives streaked with hot fervour or icy thought, and novels from around the world – in English and in translation – concerned with life’s tragedy and beauty and humour. At heart, I’m looking for that heady sort of book that thrills you in its newness and difference, but allows you still to look your less bookish friends in the eye when you recommend it.

Authors on my list include Olga Ravn, Nell Zink, Saou Ichikawa, Rie Qudan, Roger McGough, Gabriel García Márquez and Brian Friel. I look after Viking’s fiction backlist, and I’m always on the look-out for forgotten classics.
