Charlotte Voake (Illustrator) 
Voake was born in Wales and studied at the University of London. Her first illustrations were published while she was studying there in 1978. She won the Sheffield Children's Book Award and the Smarties Book Award twice. She has been shortlisted for both the Kurt Maschler Emil Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal. 
 
Julia Donaldson (Foreword) 
Donaldson studied at Bristol University. She has written over a hundred books and plays for children, including the award-winning The Gruffalo. Julia has won many awards, including the Blue Peter Awards and was the Children's Laureate 2011-2013.

Edward Lear (1812-88) originally earned his living as a commercial artist. A skilled landscape painter and ornothological illustrator, he was art master to Queen Victoria for a time. His nonsense writing began as a sideline to amuse himself and hisfriend's children but soon made him a household name. 
 
Vivien Noakes is the leading authority on Lear; editor of his Selected Letters (1988) and the definitive biography, she also curated the Lear exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1985.
