Big screen adaptations of Darkest Hour and Mudbound receive 10 collective nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards

OSCARS

The 2018 Oscar nominations were announced yesterday (23 January), with two adaptations of Penguin Random House titles picking up a total of ten nominations between them.

The film version of Viking's Darkest Hour has six nominations, including Best Actor in a Leading Role for Gary Oldman's acclaimed performance as Winston Churchill, and Best Picture. The production received other nods for Cinematography, Best Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling and Costume Design.

Mudbound, based on Hillary Jordan's novel (published by Windmill), is nominated for Adapted Screenplay, Original Song, Cinematography and Best Supporting Actress for Mary J. Blige's performance. Rachel Morrison's nomination for Cinematography marks the first time a woman has been nominated in that category.

The nominees were announced by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis live from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. This year's awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 4 March, marking 90 years of the Academy Awards.

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water leads with 13 nominations, Dunkirk has eight, and the Golden Globes-dominating Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri came away with seven. Blade Runner 2049 and Lady Bird have five nominations each, while Get OutCall Me By Your Name, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow with four.
