The National Theatre is pleased to host an exclusive evening with Bernardine Evaristo in conversation about her Booker Prize-winning novel Girl, Woman, Other. Bernardine will be in conversation with journalist, writer and broadcaster Samira Ahmed with readings by actors Adjoa Andoh and Franc Ashman.

What can this new decade mean for writers and artists of colour in Britain? How can we ensure that the explosion of books and art by people, and particularly women, of colour aren’t a fad but are the foundations of our future?

Bernardine will discuss these questions and more as she shares feelings around being the first black woman to win the Booker Prize and why she considers it such an exciting time to be a black female writer.

Samira Ahmed is an award-winning journalist and broadcaster, presenting Front Row on Radio 4 and Newswatch on BBC1, and Samira regularly introduces NT Live broadcasts.

Adjoa Andoh is a film, television and theatre actor and director. She recently co-directed and starred in Richard II at The Globe and has extensive experience in theatre with the RSC, The Bush, Young Vic and at the National Theatre (Or You Could Kiss Me, His Dark Materials, Stuff Happens).

Franc Ashman recently appeared as Hermione Granger in the West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and has performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company and with Out of Joint. She has also worked for the National Theatre, recently playing Lorraine in Nine Night.

The evening will feature readings from Girl, Woman, Other, which has been described as ‘beautiful’, ‘triumphant’, ‘exceptional’ and a ‘novel of our times’, and was named by Barack Obama as one of his favourite books of 2019.
